My L niger colony is still in the test tube in the basin so water is not an issue. I will be leaving them for 6 days or so - is it vital to feed them whilst I'm away, they would get fresh honey water and insects before I go?
It depends the size of your colony I happen to know the bigger the colony the longer they can go without food as they will store it in all the workers sothey can feed each other for a while
I give food to my colony only once a week. I'm sure they would survive much longer, but usually after a week they start leaving formicarium and searching outside, so I assume it is time to give them something before they find a way to my kitchen
It al depends on the size of the colony. If you give them a large insect and fresh honey (sweets) and clean water before you leave they will do just fine.
dam i feed mine everyday, expect the really small colonys they get it once a week but they have less than 10 workers.. my rubra get at least 3 crickets a day.
You may feed them whenever you like Steve.
To all: you need to look at the food you have given before, if the ants don't touch it, that means you feed them to much. But if almost all food is touched or eaten you need to feed a bit more.
