big ants... need new farm... got questions...

Beitragvon charles17 » 15. Aug 2005 01:59

hi i had a few questions.
i caught these ants and their queen up in the mountains- the queen is about 2 cm long and . 5 cm wide, about 1 cm wide if you count her legs. the workers are about 1 cm long and .3 cm wide, 1 cm counting their legs...
my measly american uncle milton ant farms cant handle them... not only is it not wide enough but the hole to the soil section wouldnt even fit the smallest worker...
so i was wondering if the .8 mm thick standard ant farms were suitable for this kinda species? or the 1 cm thick deluxe ant display?
and i was wondering about the connectability of the antstore ant farms. im not sure how the connections would work... are there any pictures of connecting ant farms?
and the antstore antfarms look pretty sturdy, but i was wondering if they really are... and if there are better designed antfarms out there... although you will probably say that antstore antfarms are the best... lol...
and i was wondering how long it would take to ship to the usa.
and i found these ants under a log... will a regular ant farm with loam and sand be fine? or would they prefer wood ant farms? although i havent seen any evidence of them chewing on the wood they were under...
and sincei found them in a damp place... does it seem like a good idea to keep them moist?
sorry for the many questions and
thanks!

It is living mostly in mountains, in conifer forests.
They prefer sand and dry wood :), or only wood.
yeah, I think that 8mm is to small.

Does it looks like this?

yeah, it looks like that, although im not sure about the small details in its physique that makes it herculeanus, or another type of Camponotus species.

I've just bought a book called Carpenter Ants of the United States and Canada recently. It was written by Laurel D. Hansen and John H. Klotz. Try to find it in a library near you. It could help you since you probably have a carpenter ant species (genus Camponotus).

Hi Charles,

sorry but what do you mean with "type"?
We have lots of Type in our sortiment: http://www.antstore.net/shop/index.php?cPath=39

If you have a antfarm than you need a seperat basin (arena) for food and waste.

o sorry if i wasnt clear-
i was wondering if i should get the ant display deluxe or the ant display standard... cuz the ants are pretty big- so i wasnt sure theyd be comfy in the 8 mm width of the regular ant display.

o, thanks sebesta. but the Formicarium Highlander might be out of my price range... and id prefer something less... three-dimensional than the ant apartment so that i could see the tunnels and stuff... how thick is the Formicarium Highlander? would an ant display deluxe not be thick enough for the type of ants i have?

Which ants would you like to keep?
The Highlander and the Ant Apartment is for maximum Camponoutus ligniperda ants. For bigger ants you need a big glas basin or a big box.
The Highlander is 8 or 10 cm thick.
