Few Qs about Antstore's Ant Starter kit & Lasius niger

Beitragvon barnettgs » 18. Apr 2005 17:57

My sister has bought Ant World for my nephews so I'm helping out by looking after it. I have been interested in ants since I was teenger (years ago!)

I have decided to find professional ant farm and found this site. :thumright:

I have Lasius niger (found near my home, N Ireland) workers currently in Ant World and have no queen. I also realised that there are few different Lasius niger such as one on your site. Yours seemed to be smaller apart from queen but probably faster moving.

I'm interested in buying Hyperlinks sind nur für registrierte Nutzer sichtbar and ant island (good idea?) but not sure which one of two island to buy but I assume bigger is better for ease of use?

Q1 Should I order Lasius niger along with Ant Starter Kit or best to order Ant Starter kit first and prepare it to be ready before ordering ants? I live in N Ireland

Q2 Hibernate. I have seen the info on it but never explained properly about the lower tempurature (how cold/cool?) required to hibernate the ants

Q3 How often to hibernate? And how long?

Q4 What is ideal temperature condition for ants in active?

Q5 Ant box comes with Ant Starter kit, is it for ants to roam around stick etc? What other uses would it for?

Q6 Ant display - What I need for filling and where to get & how to keep it moisture. I have seen info about tube with water to keep it moist but never seen a working picture.

Thanks in advance

Dear barnettgs,
:sign_welcome: in our Forum.

Better you order all together.

Q2 Hibernate. I have seen the info on it but never explained properly about the lower tempurature (how cold/cool?) required to hibernate the ants

- +5 to +10 °C

Q3 How often to hibernate? And how long?

- 4-5 month

Q4 What is ideal temperature condition for ants in active?

- look how is the outside temperatur in your garden, but 18 - 20°C is OK

Q5 Ant box comes with Ant Starter kit, is it for ants to roam around stick etc? What other uses would it for?

- ?

Q6 Ant display - What I need for filling and where to get & how to keep it moisture. I have seen info about tube with water to keep it moist but never seen a working picture.

- 1x clay, 2x loam 4x sand the water can give over a tube to the ground. Please look in the user gallery the photos.

Greetings Martin :D

Thanks for useful info and quick reply!

For Q5, I mean what could Ant Box be used for? Anything to put in for ant to wander around?

Fillings for ant display, got it...so I have tried looking at gallery, they are hard to see close up.

1) put clay on the bottom
2) place the tube into clay (should I put in wool on each end of tube?)
3) Mix loam & sand together and fill it
4)Fill the tube with water and close it with cotten wool
5) Job done! Am I correct?

Oh, Starter kit comes with sand and loam but how much are they? Should I order potter's clay only (and extra sand and loam)?

Also, is 20x30cm ant island worth? I thought it is great way to feed the ants plus open air view. With it, do I need extra tube and connector?

Thanks

Hi barnettgs,

here's the correct order for filling the farm:

1) place the tube into the farm (put in wool on each end of tube)
2) put clay on the bottom
3) Mix loam & sand together and fill it
4) Fill the tube with water and close it with cotten wool
5) Job done!

Fill 10% of the farm's height with clay, then fill 75% of the farm with the sand-loam mix, then fill the tube with water and wait for the sand-loam mix to soak up the water. Don't fill in too much water.

Hope that helps,

:)

I would have answered that if I would have known an answer to it ... Maybe you wait for Martin to answer that.

Thanks, I will wait before I can make a order. It is probably because the specification is not shown on Antworld Starter kit so hard to make out what's on picture.

Cheers :)

Hello bartneggs,

no, the starter-set is enough. You get with the starter-set a mini-antfarm, arena, loam/sand mixture, a fodder cup, tube, tweezers and food. You don`t need further accessories - no ant island. If you want, you can order potter's clay, but it isn' t urgently necessary.

greetings
Uta :sun02:

Thanks. I don't mind paying bit more for ant island, clay and extra tube as they will be shipped together with starter kit and ants rather than ordering at separate time.

This is because I have experienced with AntWorld set so I found out about clay with extra tube and also ant island, I just think of them as luxury items!

It would be:

Ant Starter kit, 20x30 ant island, potter clay, extra tube and lasius niger ants.

Thanks again, I think I have made up my mind.
